Safety instructions

This manual has to be kept with the laser device all the time. The working area where the laser is installed has to be marked according to the legal requirements to avoid any damage to a third person. No mirrors are to be brought into the beam path as this may create dangerous reflexions.
In case of any disfunction turn off the device immediately!

General advice

Safety references serve the occupational safety and health and the accident prevention. They have to be followed! To prevent you and your colleagues from damages you'll have to cooperate. Always work cautiously and be aware that dangers mostly are not "obvious". To guarantee a safe operating process the operator has to make sure that every person who works on or with the device has been informed about the possible dangers of laser radiation. You can protect yourself against avoidable damages if you are familiar with the following national cooperative regulations for the prevention of industrial accidents (UVV):

  • UVV "Electrical installations and equipment" (BGV A2/VBG 4) 
  • UVV "Laser radiation" (BGV B2/VBG 93)
  • UVV "Safety labelling at work" (BGV A8/VBG 125)

You can get the texts from the occupation co-operative which is responsibe for you or download it e.g. from the internet under http://www.bc-verlag.de/UVVen/inh.htm . Additionally, there is a reference to the norm EN 60825-1/ VDE-regulation VDE 0837 (as of November 2001) „Safety of laser devices“. Attention should especially be paid to paragraph three - guidelines for the user! The norm is available by the publishing company Beuth GmbH, Burggrafenstrasse 6, 10787 Berlin, Germany. In countries other than Germany you have to follow the regulations that correspond to the German UVVs and norms. In the USA you have to follow for example ANSI Z136.1 Standard for the safe use of lasers and IEC 825-1, Safety of Laser Products - Part 1: Equipment classification, requirements, and user's guide (available from American National Standards Institute, Washington, DC Headquarters, 1819 L Street, NW, 6th Fl., Washington, DC, 20036, USA, Tel: +1 / 202.293.8020, Fax: +1 / 202.293.9287). The responsibility for mounting and operating the device has to be determined and observed by the operator. You should refrain from every mode of operation which affects the safety of the device in a negative way. Any national regulation going beyond that, becomes effective for the operation of the device without restrictions.
Alterations to the device are only allowed with a written permission from Z-LASER !

Laser classes

Z-LASER manufactures its products according to international standards and declares the laser classes of its products after EN 60825-1, IEC 825-1 and 21 CFR 1040. The laser class is given on the yellow or black/white/red (USA) warning label, which can be found on every laser or on its tightly screwed dimming cap. Do never remove this warning label! It is absolutely necessary that the safety measures which result from the single laser class are observed (see UVVen and norms). For your information is here an extract from the EN 60825-1, safety of laser devices, Chap. 12.5 Laser devices in laboratories and at the place of work (p. 48):

Laser devices of class 1M, class 2, class 2M and class 3R

Precautionary measures are only necessary to avoid a permanent direct looking into the laser beam; for classes 2 and 2M is a momentary (0.25 sec.) irradiation in a wave length range between 400 nm and 700 nm, as it may occur when you accidentally look into the beam, not considered to be dangerous. However, you should not level the laser beam intentionally at people. The use of optical aids (e.g. binoculars) together with laser devices of the classes 1M, class 2M and class 3R may increase the danger for the eyes . . .

Laser devices of class 3B

Laser of the laser class 3B are potentially dangerous, if a direct or a reflected (e.g. by a mirror) beam hits the unprotected eye (direct looking into the laser beam). The following precautions should be taken to avoid the direct looking into the laser as well as uncontrolled reflections of the beam: a) The laser should only be operated in a controlled area. b) Unintended reflections should be avoided by paying attention. c) The laser beam should, where it is possible, not end on a diffuse dispersive material at the end of the beam. Colour and reflecting ability of the material have to allow a beam adjusting and at the same time keep the dangers of the reflection as low as possible. * d) Eye protection is necessary, if there is a possiblity that either the direct or the reflected beam may hit the eye or that a diffuse reflection, which does not fulfil the conditions of c), can be looked at. e) The access of the laser control area should be labelled with the laser warning sign. * Conditions for a safe looking at a diffuse reflection of a class 3B laser, which emits in the visible range, are: a minimum distance of 13cm between screen and the eye's cornea, and a maximum observation period of 10 secs. Other observation conditions require a comparison of the radiation created by the diffuse reflection with the value of the permitted maximum radiation. Note: For class 3B lasers you should appoint a Laser Safety Officer. This Laser Safety Officer should be responsible for checking the precautionary measures according to EN 60825-1 (as of 2001) and to determine suitable controls, which are to be established.

General Safety Instructions

1. The lasers are only designed for operating with the valtages given in the technical data. To avoid disturbances it is absolutely necessary to observe these data. Especially spikes and other disturbances of the electric network (caused for example by the switching on of heavy machines) may damage the laser. If it is not certain that these conditions can be fulfilled, the input voltage necessarily has to be stabilised by appropriate measures (primary protection / voltage stabilizer, e.g. Z-LASER line filter ZNF).
2. High operating temperatures (> 45°C or. > 113 F) reduce the lifetime significantly.
3. Please do not operate the laser above the given IP classes: Example: IP65 6: Dustproof , 5: Water-jet proof Please remember: Oil and chemicals are no water! A water-jet proof laser is not necessarily protected against oil or chemicals!
